OAU Job Vacancy:Internal and External Advertisement for the Post of Bursar


The Post of the Bursar of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, will be vacant by 10th May, 2018. Interested applicants are requested to note the following information:
The University
The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, is a first-generation comprehensive public institution established in 1961 as The University of Ife, by the then Western Region of Nigeria. In August 1975, the Federal Government of Nigeria took over the University and in 1987 renamed it after Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a frontline Nigerian Statesman and one of the University’s founding fathers. The University is situated on a vast expanse of land totaling 11,861 hectares in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Southwest of Nigeria.
The University has continued to be a renowned center of excellence over the years. Known as the most beautiful campus South of Sub Sahara Africa, it has produced among its staff, a Nobel Laureate and five National Merit Award Winners and has blazed the trail in the inventions of modern technologies applicable for alleviating some of society’s challenges today. From an enrolment figure of 244 at inception, Obafemi Awolowo University as at 2016/2017 academic session had a total student enrolment figure of 25,023. Also, the University which took off with a staff strength of 94 members, has grown to have a staff profile of 4,767 comprising 1,399 academic staff, and 3,368 Non-teaching staff.
The Job
  1. The Bursar is the Chief Financial Officer of the University and is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day administration and control of the financial affairs of the University.
  2. The Bursar shall hold office for a period of five years from the effective date of his/her appointment and on such terms and conditions as may be specified in the letter of appointment.
The Person
The person to be appointed must have exhibited in the past, considerable ability, competence, industry and integrity. He or she must be proactive and capable of efficient and effective management of a coordinated system of decentralized Bursary. He/she must possess good human relations.
Qualification and Experience
The applicant must possess a good University honours degree in Accounting or related discipline with at least 10 years relevant experience preferably in University accounting system or that of comparable institution of higher learning, Industry, commerce or any other arms of the Public Service. Possession of a relevant higher degree will be an added advantage while adequate knowledge of computer applications and Certificate of the Final Examinations of any of the recognized bodies viz: ICAN, ANAN, ACCA or any other recognized and acceptable accounting professional qualification.
The applicant must have served for at least five (5) years in Senior Management position not lower than Deputy Bursar or its equivalent. The candidate should not be older than 60 years of age by May 10, 2018.
Entitlements and Benefits
A consolidated salary as for Bursars of Federal Universities with benefits which include a subsidized hard-furnished residential accommodation on the University campus, medical care for the appointee, spouse and up to five (5) children. Forty-two (42) working days annual paid leave, official car and driver, Contributory Pension Scheme, gardener, and such other benefits as may be determined from time to time by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the University Governing Council.

Late applications will NOT be entertained and only applications of shortlisted candidates will be acknowledged.

Each applicant must submit not more than a two-page statement of his/her vision for the University, and particularly the administration, growth and control of its financial affairs

The printed online application form, along with the hard copies of the application document, is to be submitted under confidential cover within 6 weeks from the date of advertisement and addressed to: The Registrar, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
Referees’ Report
Candidates applying for the position are advised to request their referees to forward confidential reports on them directly to the Registrar and Secretary to Council within the period allowed for the submission of applications. The envelopes containing the reports should be duly marked “CONFIDENTIAL – Application for the Post of Bursar”.
